Students and Parents,
It has been a busy and short week here in room 214! Here are some of the updates for the different classes.
3rd Grade Writing:
This week students have been working on their fantasy stories. Students were to write a fantasy story that was a minimum of 2 pages long. Many, however, wrote much, much more! I have enjoyed working with many of the 3rd graders this week to get their stories edited and revised. They have done a great job and are continuing to work hard. We are now at the end of the writing process for this story and we will be continuing to work on our final drafts tomorrow during class.
As a side note, the students did an awesome job rewriting Miley Cyrus's lyrics from "Party in the USA" to "Party in the 3rd Grade!" To practice our performing and theater skills we are currently working on our music video outside of academic time. It has been fun for many of the students and they are doing a great job!
3rd Grade Reading:
A new reading group joined my classroom this week. Students are meeting in small groups, working on grammar and handwriting, and reading independently while they are in my room. They have practiced their reading strategies of predicting and questioning so far!
3rd Grade Math:
This week we have covered lines, rays, line segments, parallel lines, and intersecting lines. Today, we did not have math in my classroom due to a guest speaker at school. However, tomorrow, we will be learning more about angles and turns. Ask your student about our school wide search for parallel and intersecting lines!
5th Grade Reading:
This week we read the story "Yang's First Thanksgiving." Students have been discussing cultural differences and misunderstandings. We have discussed many different situations in our class so far which I am sure they would love to share with you! The weekly skill was compare and contrast. The weekly vocab words are: dismay, impression, insult, records, sprouts, and winced. Tomorrow afternoon is our reading test! Please study!
We also will be reading Maniac Magee in class.
5th Grade Math:
This unit is all about decimals and fractions. Students have begun to discover different ways to turn fractions into decimals and we will continue to find new methods over the course of the unit. Students today participated in a "equivalent fraction challenge." Ask them how their group did and what an equivalent fraction is!
Hope you have been having a great week!
Ms. Mulvahill
