Brown Bag Paragraphs

Tonight:

  • Pick one object to put inside your brown bag.

  • Write a paragraph on a loose leaf paper that describes what is inside--but don't say what it is!

  • Use as many adjectives and sensory words as you need to help the readers visualize what it is!

  • Tomorrow, we will read our classmate's paragraphs and guess what it is! Remember, you want your writing to be so descriptive that you paint the picture of your object in our minds!

  • Be prepared to highlight the different adjectives that you used to help your writing be more descriptive.

A reply!!

Wahoo! We got a letter back from the Veterans Hospital. Check it out:

Students measuring!

Today we found objects and estimated their length.

Later, we got to go back and compare our estimates with their actual length!

Week in Reveiw by: Jessica Schmid

Dear Viewers,

This week has been wonderful! We just finished our Sarah, Plain and Tall test. We had music on Monday and Tuesday. We had art on Wednesday, Thursday and today Friday! We read about Komodo Dragons.

Today we also be taking our spelling and reading tests. We just got back from ''meeting'' Jane Adams! It was very interesting.

We did a science/health experiment about germs. Since three of us had an old t-shirt AND a note we got to for sure be the handwashers in our groups! What we did was we put paint on our hands and a blindfold over our eyes. The paint was representing the germs on our hands and the blindfold was to make it seem more like real life so you couldn't decide which germs you want to get off and all that stuff.

Next Tuesday we have a social studies test about people, landforms, and climate in the South! Also for the people in choir we have our first concert! The first one is at 1:30 and the second one is at 7:00 pm.

Well I have to go now! Talk to all of you later! Bye!

Love and Sincerely,

Jessica Schmid (had it in cursive)

Punctuation Joke... Do you get it?

Let's eat Grandpa.
Let's eat, Grandpa.

Correct punctuation can save a life!

Our Work in ACTION!!

The lessons that we learn in our classroom can be applied and shared outside of our classroom as well! The letters that our 4th graders wrote last week are a great example!

Students wrote thank you letters to service men and women in our military!

Look at all those great letters!! Ms. Brandon and I couldn't wait to deliver them to the Veterans' Hospital!

Keeping the letters safe on the way to the hospital. Always buckle up!

WHOO-HOO! The letters have made it! The soldiers that receive your letters are going to be so happy to know that you appreciate all they have done to fight for freedom!

(See, you can put all your great skills from the classroom into ACTION in the outside world!)

A Note from Miss Mulvahill

Dear Parents,

Our newsletter is coming home a day early this week because we are also sending home progress reports. These reports specifically look at student study skills and behavior at school. No marking means that the student is currently doing at great job. An "I" means that your student is improving on this task and an "N" means that your student needs to continue to make improvements. Also, we have attached some reports from our online grade book and IXL! These will help show the academic areas for continued growth and the areas where students are succeeding.

Along with these progress reports students are bringing home their portfolios! Please take some time to look over your student's work with him or her. They have been doing a great job developing their reading, writing, and math skills and they are ready to show it off! Any work that is not three hole punched into their portfolio can stay at home.

Please take some time to look over their portfolio and sign their progress report. Both of these should be returned to school on Friday, November 11th.

Other important notes:

· We are in a poetry unit. Students are learning more about figurative language (tools poets and writers use) and the different kinds of poetry. Next Friday (11/18), students will present their poems to the class during our 'poetry slam'.

· Students should be practicing their math facts at home every night. Many students have "mastered" their multiplication facts on IXL. This does not mean that they do not need to practice any more. They should continue to practice at home until they are automatic (less than a 3 second recall).

· Have you seen your student working on IXL? Students should be well on their way using this great online tool! We will be sending home progress reports next week reflecting their work. You can check how they are doing any time by signing into their individual account. Please have students practice every night!

· Don't forget Bookmatch Blast! Students must read 20 books by the end of the semester. The more time students spend reading, the more they will learn and the better readers they will become!

Have a great night!

Dear Families,
This week in fourth grade was exellent. In reading we read the story Addie in Charge. Addie saves her little brother from a prarie fire. That was my favorite story in reading so far.
In math we are learning about trades first subtraction. You have to do all your trading before you can start subtracting. To me trades first is a very easy and quick way to subtract.
In social studies we are learning about the climate, landforms, natural resorces, and people of the Northeast region. One example of a climate is rainy. One example of a group of people is the Pilgrams. One example of a landform is mountains. One example of a natural resorce is fish. We learned a lot in social studies this week. Sincerily,

Homework Tonight 4/13

Students are coming home with a lot of great activities to work on tonight!

1. They need to complete 15 minutes on IXL Math. Remember that 15 minutes is the minimum, but they are welcomed to go above and beyond! Students need to first work on problem: 4.3.2.3. Why? It will help them study for their test coming on Monday! Also, I will be counting their SmartScore as a quiz grade in our gradebook.

2. Many students have already finishing the comprehension check for our story this week: A Peddler's Dream. However, if it is not yet done, it is homework tonight. Don't forget to use page numbers to show me where you found your information--PROVE your answer is right!

3. Finally, students have a quick spelling worksheet. It should not take students more than 5-10 minutes and it will help students stay fresh for their test on Friday.

Have a great night and see you tomorrow!

Tomorrow we will be starting IXL math. I had the opportunity to introduce this program to many of you over conferences. Students will be taking home their user names and passwords tomorrow, so they can continue their math practice at home.

The games and activities on this program will help your student work towards mastering all of the 4th grade math skills we cover. I am thrilled to utilize this program in our classroom! If you have any questions regarding IXL, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone (952-707-3361) or email (kmulvahill@burnsville.k12.mn.us).

Thanks!

Dylan's New Site

Dylan and I got to talking about some of the great math sites we have found so far this year. He informed me that he has another site to add to our list! It is called:

When I was able to check the site out, I was happy to see that it has more than just math! As you know, this year we are learning all about the states. So far we have covered the Northeast and the South. Check out this great game, State the State, to practice naming and placing the 50 states.

Thanks Dylan for finding us another great learning site!

Who is Marven?!

Marven of the Great North Woods

The Lasky family emigrated from Russia to America in the early 1900‘s. From 1880 - 1930, 3,300,000 emigrated from Russia. People seeking to come from Russia would often make their way to Hamburg, Germany or Rotterdam, Netherlands and board a ship departing for America. Most ships would disembark at Ellis Island, a small island in New York Harbor. It had been designated the first Federal immigration station in 1890.

Health: Influenza

There was a flu epidemic in Minnesota. An epidemic is an outbreak of a contagious disease that spreads rapidly and widely.

What causes the flu?
The flu is caused by the influenza virus. It is spread from person to person by direct contact (shaking hands), small droplets from sneezes or coughs, contact with objects (hanker chiefs, clothing) that have been in contact with fluid from an infected person's nose or throat.

What are flu symptoms?
Different strains of flu include various symptoms, but the following are the most common:
~fever (usually 100° F to 103° F)
~cough
~sore throat
~runny nose
~headache
~muscle ache

Sometimes diarrhea and vomiting are also symptoms. Most people recover from the flu in 1-2 weeks.

Lots of people get the flu, but what do you do?
~Drink lots of liquids, like water, chicken broth, and other fluids.
~Get plenty of sleep. If you can't sleep anymore, keep resting. Listen to music, watch a movie, or read a book or magazine.
~Wear layers. You might be cold one minute and hot the next, so if you wear plenty of layers you can pull your favorite sweatshirt on and off.
~Wash your hands! You don't want to spread the germs that cause the flu. Don't share cups and eating utensils, like forks and spoons, with anyone.

It's important to let someone know if you have trouble breathing, your muscles really hurt, you feel confused, or if you start feeling worse at any time.

The Flu Germs

Chicken Jokes
Marven doesn't want his dad to tell the chicken joke again. I wonder which one he was referring to...

Q: Why did the chicken cross the park???
A:
To get to the other slide!

Q: Why did the chicken cross the basketball court ?
A:
He heard the referee calling fowls!

Q: Why did the turkey cross the road ?
A:
To prove he wasn't chicken!

Q: Why didn't the chicken skeleton cross the road ?
A:
Because he didn't have enough guts!

Q: What do chicken families do on Saturday afternoon?
A:
They go on peck-nics!

Q: What do you call a rooster who wakes you up at the same time every
morning?
A:
An alarm cluck!

Q: Why don't chickens like people?
A:
They beat eggs!

Math

Next week in math we will continue to work with “really big numbers” and two digit multiplication. Students are learning about exponents, lattice, partial products, and scientific notation.

I know the way we have students do their multiplication today is much different from how you learned it! If you ever have any questions on how to help your student, please use their Student Reference Book or SBR for reference. You can always email me too!

Reading Tests Online:

We have changed the format of how students take their reading tests. We now use Classmarker.com to take our test. Students will bring home their scores, but will not bring home a test sheet. To look at your student’s test more deeply, please sign into your student’s account on classmarker. Your student has their individual log-in name and password.

Next Week in Reading

Next Week in Reading
This week we will read in class Marven of the Great North Woods. Knowing the meaning of the vocabulary words is very important in this story. Here are the new vocabulary words that we will be learning next week:

Cord: unit for measuring cut wood
Depot: railroad or bus station
Flapjacks: pancakes
Grizzly: large, fierce bear of North America
Snowshoes: shoes with wooden frame and strips of leather stretched across

Reading Reflection

Yesterday, Ms. Johnson read to our class from the story Fourth Grade Greek for President. I missed what happened! Can you catch me up on what is going on in our story? How is Rosie doing in the race for class president? Make a prediction: do you think she will win? Can you tell me what part of the plot our story is in?

Write a reflection from yesterday's read aloud.
