5th Grade Reading: Mystery BLOG POINT!

5th Grade Weather Reports
The reading target skill this past week was reading graphic sources. In class, we practiced this target skill by reading different graphs from the Weather Channel's website. Students were given a graphic organizer with weather information from a city somewhere around the world! It was their job to tell the weather using at least 3 vocabulary words and information from the graphic source. Many students were very creative in how they reported the weather. From Paris, France to Beijing, China, here are four weather report examples...
Don't worry 5th graders...
I haven't forgotten about you! I will post another mystery blog post tomorrow for over the break!

Alright 3rd graders...
Tomorrow is our Chapter 3 test. Be sure to study tonight! We will be continuing to complete work in our Math Journal after the test tomorrow, so make sure to bring it to class!
Here is your blog point for the night:
I have a square. One side measures 5 inches, but I don't know the measurements of the other sides. What is the perimeter of my square?
Would I label the perimeter square inches? Why or why not?
Also, here is an extra question:
Guess the number that when you subtract 4 and then subtract 5 is -7.
If you liked the second question, go to this website:
http://www.funbrain.com/guess2/index.html
Select:
'easy'
'addition and subtraction'
'1-5'

Dear 3rd and 5th Grade Families,
This was a very busy week for most students in room 214. Here is what went on in the different sections:
3rd Grade Reading:
Students this week are reading the story: Reindeer Do Wear Striped Underwear by Marcia Thronton Jones and Debbie Dadey. Along with this story students are working on making predictions and determining the important information. Ask your student if reindeer really do wear striped underwear!
Students are also working on grammar and handwriting in my classroom. They should be to page 21 in Handwriting. In grammar, page 43 and 44 were assigned as homework if they did not finish it in class today.
3rd Grade Math:
In math this week we have been talking about perimeter, line plots, tiling, and area! Next week, we will have our test on chapter 3. Students received a review packet from Mr. Kleven and Mrs. Engdahl earlier this week. Tomorrow, we will be discussing diameter and circumference!
3rd Grade Writing:
This week students have been continuing to work on generating story ideas. Students listened to the book: Diary of Worm. Afterward, students created a diary of their creature of choice. Tomorrow will be day 3 in their diary entries! I have seen some very creative diaries including a giraffe, a hamster, a mouse, and a dolphin! Many students have done a great job writing beyond the required three entries. It is great to see them excited about their work. I am sure they would love to share their stories and ideas with you!
5th Grade Reading:
This week we began reading: The Fury of a Hurricane. Many students were excited to share stories of hurricanes and storms that they remember or have heard about. Since we have a short week next week, our final test will not be until next Tuesday. We will review the text on Monday, but I encourage students to bring the book home over the weekend to study!
The skill of the week was reading graphic sources. As a fun activity to practice the skill, students have become weather reporters from around the globe. Students were assigned a graphic source that had information regarding a city somewhere in the world. Tomorrow, students will be presenting their weather report in our afternoon class. They are welcome to bring props for their presentation!
I will list the vocabulary words on the blog each week from now on. Please make sure your student is studying these words throughout the week!
5th Grade Math:
In math we have finished Chapter 2 and we are just beginning Chapter 3. This chapter students will be working with geometry. We are doing A LOT of work with angles, shapes, patterns, tessellations, and measuring. Here is a good site Ms. Brandon recommended to help your student work on measuring angles!
http://www.classbrain.com/artgames/publish/banana_angles_hunt.shtml (copy and paste the link to get to banana hunt!)
As I explained earlier, I have encouraged students to check the blog for "blog points." Blog points are enrichment activities for students to do at home after the school day or over the weekend. It is also a way for me to know that students are frequently checking the blog for homework and test reminders, and notes home to parents! Blog points do not go toward a student's grade, but they do go toward earning a reward at school! Please encourage your student to participate in our blog points and online activities. They will be labeled according to the grade and subject. Students are welcome to comment online OR by bringing the answer to the blog point on a piece of paper to school the next day.
If you have any question or comments, please feel free to send me an email or give me a call.
Have a great weekend!

3rd Grade Math BLOG POINT
3rd grade math group! Here is your first blog point. In order to get the "blog point" complete the math problem below. To respond, click with your mouse on the word 'comments' below this post. When you click on the work 'comments,' it should allow you to write in a white box. Answer the problem and tell me why you think your answer is right! You must tell me why in order to recieve the point.
The problem:
Miss Mulvahill would like to build a fence around her yard for her puppy. Last week she measured the yard and it turned out to be a perfect square! However, Miss Mulvahill's puppy chewed up the paper she wrote her measurements on. All she has now is the measurement of one side. It was 10 feet long. What are the measurements of the other sides of the yard? What is the perimeter of the yard?
Good luck solving the problem 3rd graders! If you would like more practice with perimeters, copy and paste the link below. It is a perimeter math game!

5th grade reading group! Here is your first blog point. In order to get the "blog point" read the following selection below. After reading the selection, determine the author's purpose. To respond, click with your mouse on the word 'comments' below this post. When you click on the work 'comments,' it should allow you to write in a white box. Write what you think the author's purpose was and write 2-3 sentences telling me WHY you think that was the author's purpose. You must tell me why in order to recieve the point.
The selection:
Edith Roosevelt was the First Lady at the turn of the last century. She was married to Theodore Roosevelt. She managed the White House while raising six children. She had known Theodore Roosevelt since she was a baby. She was a playmate of his younger sister.

Dear 3rd and 5th Grade Families,
We have had a great start to our year working together in room 214. Both 3rd and 5th graders come down to my classroom throughout the day for either math or reading. Here are some updates for the different class sections:
3rd Grade Reading:
This week I had the opportunity to work with almost all of the 3rd graders in guided reading groups! It was great to get to know names and faces. Starting today (Friday), I met with the two guided reading groups that I will work with on a more regular basis. Today, we began our new novel (Reindeer Do Wear Striped Underwear by Marcia Thronton Jones and Debbie Dadey). We will be working with this book for the next week!
3rd Grade Math:
In math this week we have been talking about perimeter, line plots, data collection, and measuring! Next week, we will complete an exploration with geo dots and tiling on Monday. We will also learn how to figure out the area of a shape!
3rd Grade Writing:
Friday was the first writing lesson from Ms. Mulvahill in the 3rd grade. Students are working on generating story ideas. In their current story, they used pictures to help give them ideas. Ask your student about the story that they are writing!
5th Grade Reading:
5th graders met in Ms. Mulvahill's room twice a day this past week for reading and reading workshop. The skill that we focused on this week was: author's purpose. Ask your student about four of the reasons why authors write!
If your student enjoyed the story Eloise Greenfield, here are some other selection they might enjoy as well!
1. Honey, I Love, and Other Love Poems by Eloise Greenfield
2. Talk About a Family by Eloise Greenfield
3. Pioneer Girl: Growing Up on the Prairie by Andrea Warren
5th Grade Math:
5th grade math students met in Ms. Mulvahill's room this week to work in small groups on different lessons from our current unit. Ask your student to teach you: expanded notation, place value, and magnitude estimates! All students will have completed the chapter 2 test by early next week.
Thanks again for a warm welcome into the Sioux Trail team! It was a great first week getting to know and working with the students.
Throughout the school year I will be posting "blog points." Blog points are enrichment activities for my students to do at home after the school day or over the weekend. Dear 3rd and 5th Grade Families!
November, 2009
Dear 3rd and 5th Grade Families,
Thank you for the warm welcome into the Sioux Trail team! I am thrilled to start working with your students this coming week in both reading and math. Mrs. Engdahl, Mr. Kleven, Ms. Brandon, Mrs. Laatsch, and I have worked together to create a plan that will help reduce class sizes and create more opportunities to work in smaller groups with students.
As Mr. Akin had mentioned in his newsletter home, I am a recent graduate from the University of Iowa with two degrees, one in education and one in journalism. It is great to be back in Minnesota where I grew up. Over the past few years I have taught a variety of students at different age levels. I am very excited to teach students from both 3rd and 5th grade!
I am also looking forward to getting to know both you and your children throughout this academic year. I encourage communication between parents, teachers, and students in order to foster the students' academic growth. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding your student via email or phone. My email address is: kmulvahill@burnsville.k12.mn.us. The telephone number I can be reached at is (952) 707-3370. I will also be running a classroom website and a classroom blog in order to keep families up-to-date with what has been happening in the classroom and what they can expect in the weeks to come. The classroom website can be found through the Sioux Trail website at: www.ISD191.org/Siouxtrail. The classroom blog can be found at: missmulvahill.blogspot.com. Please use these resources as a way to check on student assignments and daily activities!
I look forward to meeting you in the near future!
Sincerely,
Miss Mulvahill
